Liverpool have tabled an astonishing bid of £61.8million for Portugese teenager Joao Felix, according to CM Journal.

The Portugese newspaper claim the Merseyside giants have had their offer for the 19-year-old attacker knocked back by his club Benfica, who recently tied him to a new contract with a £106million buy-out clause.

CM Journal report Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona and Monaco are also keeping close tabs on the Portugal Under-21 international.

Good move for Liverpool?

Felix has been one of the stories of the season so far in Portugal. Since breaking into the Benfica team at the start of the campaign, he has scored six goals in 17 appearances, with four of those strikes coming in league matches even though he has mainly been used as a substitute. While his primary position is as an attacking midfielder, Felix has shown his versatility by also playing as a striker or as a winger. Technically excellent and able to operate in tight spaces against heavily-manned defences, Portugal are starting to get really excited about the teenager. He is certainly one for the future and could be an exciting long-term prospect for transfer market kings Liverpool.

Likely to happen?

There must be huge doubt as to the veracity of a story claiming Liverpool are willing to pay their third highest transfer fee ever for a 19-year-old who has yet to nail down a regular starting role at Benfica and who has not even made his senior international bow. Felix is an exciting talent, but there is no way Liverpool would pay such a monster fee for such an unproven player.
