Liverpool could sign a new defender before the transfer window shuts, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim an injury crisis has left Jurgen Klopp short of numbers at the back, with Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren all currently sidelined.

Sky Sports report that “if the Liverpool boss is to enter the market in January, then it would almost certainly be to sign a defensive reinforcement”.

OPINION

Liverpool fans should not be getting too excited at this stage about the possibility of a Virgil van Dijk-style arrival. But there is certainly the chance of a new face arriving at Anfield. It would only take one more injury to a key defender for Klopp to instruct sporting director Michael Edwards to make a move for a new player. Given that the injuries to Gomez, Arnold and Lovren are not major ones, the German is likely to hold fire for now. Liverpool let in three goals against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but that was because Wilfried Zaha burned makeshift right-back James Milner for the opener – he would not have been able to leave either Alexander-Arnold or Gomez for dead in the same way – and Van Dijk was blocked by two Palace players from leaping for the second, scored by James Tomkins. Klopp will make sure those mistakes don’t happen again. Only a serious injury should force Klopp into calling in reinforcements.
