Vincent Janssen’s potential transfer to Real Betis has collapsed after Daniel Levy moved the goalposts at the last minute, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Holland international, 24, was “certain” to join the La Liga club on a loan-to-buy transfer.

But the Sun report “Levy is understood to have increased the loan fee by £1m and the Seville-based club has walked away”. It is said Janssen is now in talks to join Bundesliga outfit Schalke.

OPINION

You can imagine Spurs fans chuckling to themselves at Levy pulling such a deadline-day stunt. The club’s long-standing chairman is renowned for negotiating skills which Sir Alex Ferguson claimed in his autobiography makes dealing with him fraught with difficulty. Ferguson recounted how Levy made the negotiation of Manchester United’s deadline-day signing of Dimitar Berbatov so tense that it was more painful than his hip replacement. It is likely that Janssen will eventually get his loan exit, but there could be plenty of twists and turns to come for the frozen-out striker before he gets the move he craves. Mauricio Pochettino has made it abundantly clear there is no way back into the Spurs team for Janssen, who has been such a disappointment since his summer-of-2016 transfer from AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie.
