Newcastle United defender Liam Gibson is on the brink of leaving the club on loan to join up with Accrington Stanley, according to reliable journalist Lee Ryder.

The Chronicle reporter, who is the chief Newcastle writer for the newspaper, claims on his personal Twitter account that the 21-year-old is set to head over to the north west side and reunite with fellow young Magpie Dan Barlaser, who has been at the League One outfit on loan since the start of the season.

Gibson, a left back, has been a regular for the club’s reserve side this season and has one unused substitute appearance for the senior side, coming last season against West Brom.

Opinion

Newcastle are lacking in quality left back options right now but it seems as though manager Rafael Benitez does not feel as though Gibson has anything to offer the first team. A loan away should help him pick up regular game time at a professional level, rather than playing reserve football week in, week out. At 21-years-old he is not a prodigious youngster and this is the time when he should be making his mark on a senior side. It seems as though Newcastle have built up quite the relationship with Accrington Stanley, having sent Barlaser and Luke Charman on loan there this season and so they obviously have faith in the League Ones side’s methods to help develop their up and coming talent. Gibson is stuck in that awkward area of being good enough for the under-23 side but not good enough for the senior outfit and so this loan should help him bridge that gap on his return to St James’ Park. If that is not the case, then there is no future for him on Tyneside, so at least he will have some exposure from his time away in the third tier.
