Everton have not received an offer for Idriss Gueye from PSG, according to the Liverpool Echo.

French outlet Telefoot reported last week that the £40million-valued Senegalese midfielder was nearing an agreement to join the Ligue 1 leaders this January, but the Echo refutes these claims.

It is understood that even if the Toffees do receive an offer for the 29-year-old they will fight to keep him this winter, with Director of Football Marcel Brands telling the club’s latest general meeting: “Most of the time you aren’t able to bring in the best players and we don’t want to let our best players go.”

The Echo do suggest, however, that the Blues could be open to the possibility of selling Gueye to the Champions League side in the summer.

OPINION

It’s understandable that Everton are unwilling to sell a player as crucial as Gueye halfway through a season, but there may be some merits to allowing the midfielder to go to PSG. At 29, the Senegalese international is not getting any younger, and if the Toffees can get something close to the £40 million they are reportedly looking for then that would represent a very decent piece of business. It may not be a fortune in today’s inflated market, but it would go a long way towards bringing in a good quality replacement, and one that could be a mainstay of their midfield for years to come. The flip side of this, of course, is that replacing Gueye would be no mean feat. There are players out there who can break up play and turn the tide of an opposition attack with the same ruthless efficiency, but they are few and far between, and cost the earth when they do become available. The Blues should not be dissuaded, however, and should cash in on Gueye if the chance is still there in the summer window.
