Jamie Carragher believes that Everton manager Marco Silva should not be getting the blame for the side’s bad results recently.

Prior to the 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the third round of the FA Cup last Saturday, the Toffees have suffered a recent slump in terms of results in the Premier League, with two 1-0 losses to Leicester and Brighton respectively.

The club’s majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri, should not be pointing the finger at Silva according to the Sky Sports pundit, and he should instead be looking to the players who have been underwhelming poor under the five previous bosses who have graced Goodison Park since 2016.

“Moshiri made his feelings about the club’s current position clear in midweek. I look at the table and it is just not good enough,” he said,” Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column.

“He is right, but he should be pointing the finger at those players who have underperformed under five managers since 2016, not the new manager. There has been too much change at Everton since Moyes left, and by Moshiri’s own admission too many bad decisions.

“Silva must be given time to get it right, otherwise Moshiri will be in danger of making a good managerial appointment look like another mistake.”

OPINION

Everton have been surprisingly poor in recent times, and they certainly do not look like the team that blew Burnley away 5-1 a few weeks ago. Two defeats to Leicester and Brighton followed – narrow losses mind you – which culiminated in a tight victory over Lincoln last Saturday. The players must surely recognise that their performances are not good enough? Carragher is right in saying that the blame must not be heaped on Silva, because it is not his fault that the club have undergone so much change. Five managers since 2016 is staggering, so it is no surprise that the club have struggled for consistency, especially the players who have sat through those changes. There is no doubting that the Toffees have the quality to do incredibly well this season – all Silva needs is time to get things right, just as Carragher has suggested. There must not be any hasty sackings in the meantime, because what good has that ever done? Everton need consistency for a change, and keeping Silva at the helm is the perfect way to do that.
