Free agent Jordon Mutch is scheduled to train with Aston Villa this week after leaving Crystal Palace, according to Sun reporter Mike McGrath.

The reliable journalist shared via his personal Twitter account that 27-year-old midfielder who has played 78 times in the Premier League and 92 times in the Championship during his career was on course to train with the Villans.

“Free agent Jordon Mutch scheduled to train with #AstonVilla this week after leaving #CrystalPalace #AVFC #cpfc,” tweeted McGrath.

Mutch left Crystal Palace at the start of January after his contract was mutually terminated six months early, as stated by Sky Sports, after he returned from a loan spell with Vancouver Whitecaps.

OPINION

McGrath doesn’t claim whether Aston Villa are looking to sign the unattached Mutch but if he impress in training then it seems only logical they’ll move him. However there is a big question mark over whether Mutch would be a worthwhile signing for the Villans. Injury problems have overshadowed Mutch’s career in the past and you wonder if it is worth Dean Smith taking a gamble on him. The 27-year-old who can be a defensive or attacking option in midfield has plenty of experience in both the Premier League and the Championship so on paper does look worth a look at least. Sky Sports’ report on Mutch’s exit shows that Vancouver Whitecaps turned down the chance to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis so you have to wonder if someone not good enough for a MLS side is good enough to rock up at Villa Park. Then again Mutch did managed to be involved in five goals in 18 appearances for the MLS team, so maybe they didn’t make their decision based on footballing reasons.
