Chelsea have identified Bournemouth centre-back Nathan Ake as a surprise transfer target in the summer, according to the Sun.

The newspaper reports on their website that the Blues are lining up a £40million summer switch for the Premier League ace, who left Stamford Bridge in 2017 in order to join the Cherries.

The report adds that the Blues have a buy-back option for the £40,000-a-week [Spotrac] star, who they view as being one of the best in the top-flight in his position.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham are also being credited with interest in the 23-year-old.

Good move for Chelsea?

Yes it would be a good move if Gary Cahill does end up leaving the club. David Luiz has been tipped to leave as well, so Maurizio Sarri will certainly need some reinforcements in this area. Ake has proved his pedigree while being at Bournemouth, which has caught the attention of Chelsea, who must regret selling him two years ago. He would be a great addition to the team – although it remains to be seen whether he is worth £40 million.

Likely to happen?

Chelsea have a buy-back clause for Ake, so it would be wise not to rule out a move for him just yet. Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe will no doubt not be in a rush to sell one of his best players, and who can really blame him? He has been vital to their success so far, and selling him back to one of the Premier League’s top teams in the summer just would not make any sense.
