Former Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Steve Bull has insisted that failing to sign Tammy Abraham from Chelsea would not be the end of the world.

Bull believes that the 21-year-old – who is currently on loan at Championship outfit Aston Villa – would be a decent signing for the recently-promoted club as he “ticks a lot of boxes”.

However, he admits that it is not essential that Wolves sign the attacking ace in this current transfer window, and added that it remains to be seen whether Abraham could handle the step up to the Premier League.

“He ticks a lot of boxes – he has scored a lot of goals for Villa in the Championship, and he is still young. The jury is out over whether he could score regularly in the Premier League, but I think goals can transfer to any level for a good striker,” he said in the Express and Star.

“Abraham is one of, probably, a few on our radar and I think he would be an asset for us, perhaps to bring off the bench for the second half of this season.

“Personally, though, I would not be massively disappointed if he did not join by the end of January.”

OPINION

Bull is spot on here – failing to sign Abraham in this current window would not be the end of the world for the club. As he pointed out, the jury is still out on whether he could replicate his goal-scoring form in the top-flight – so Wolves could have made a huge risk by signing the centre-forward. Abraham remaining on loan in the Championship is the best thing he can do at this stage in his career, because he is only 21 after all, and he needs to get plenty of experience under his belt. He no doubt has the potential to play in the Premier League, but not just yet – he does not want to be one of those players who flops in their first season and is then just forgotten about after. Wolves need to focus on securing survival this season rather than worry about signing a player like Abraham at the moment. His time will come, but right now, that will not be with Wolves.
