OPINION
Arsenal secured a hard-fought win over Cardiff City after late goal drama at Emirates Stadium, but the 2-1 triumph was not enough to appease supporters when it came to one player: Stephan Lichtsteiner. The 35-year-old was absolutely crucified for his performance on social media, following 60 minutes of action at right-back before he made way for Carl Jenkinson. The veteran Swiss is a shadow of the player who was once one of the most admired right-backs in Europe. On a night when he became the first outfield player aged 35+ to start a Premier League game for Arsenal (35 years, 13 days) since Sol Campbell v Fulham in May 2010, it could not have been clearer that Lichtsteiner’s legs have gone. With Hector Bellerin out injured for the rest of the season, Arsenal are crying out for a half-decent alternative in that position. Sub Jenkinson looks a better option than Lichtsteiner and should start at the weekend ahead of the past-it Swiss.

Lichtsteiner is the worst player we’ve had in years, and that’s saying something

By the way, I've seen some elite dross at Arsenal, but Stephan Lichtsteiner could be the highest of levels……we overpaid for him massively….and he was free…..#AFC #Arsenal #ARSCAR

Niles is poor on defending 1 v 1 situation…So Carl would do us a great deal against Sane..
No lichtsteiner in the matchday squad please. If we play from the back as we did against chelsea,we might get a draw or even a strange win

Said this time and time again I’ll have Jenko over that 60 year old Lichtsteiner and midfielder AMN any day of the week at right back, hope he gets his chance over the next few games fully deserves it

I really really really dislike Lichtsteiner. Please retire at the end of the season xxx

Come quick, you're better than Lichtsteiner

Lichtsteiner seemed to struggle to make it past 60 minutes of play today, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of him retiring at the end of the season. Great bloke, but not as fit as he once was.
