Arsenal secured a hard-fought win over Cardiff City after late goal drama at Emirates Stadium, but the 2-1 triumph was not enough to appease supporters when it came to one player: Stephan Lichtsteiner. The 35-year-old was absolutely crucified for his performance on social media, following 60 minutes of action at right-back before he made way for Carl Jenkinson. The veteran Swiss is a shadow of the player who was once one of the most admired right-backs in Europe. On a night when he became the first outfield player aged 35+ to start a Premier League game for Arsenal (35 years, 13 days) since Sol Campbell v Fulham in May 2010, it could not have been clearer that Lichtsteiner’s legs have gone. With Hector Bellerin out injured for the rest of the season, Arsenal are crying out for a half-decent alternative in that position. Sub Jenkinson looks a better option than Lichtsteiner and should start at the weekend ahead of the past-it Swiss.
