Charlie Nicholas has suggested that Everton manager Marco Silva could be under pressure following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday.

The Toffees now sit 11th in the table, having won just two of their last 10 Premier League matches.

Speaking after the game on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, Saturday 19th January, 12pm), Nicholas suggested that additional signings would not be made to ease the situation: “I don’t see them going into the market, because I think that’s already been done that business and I think they’re just trying to get through this period of time.

“He’s going to come under pressure now because these Everton fans who travelled today will not be a happy batch, and we know they can get on your case quite quickly.

“It’s a hard time for Everton.”

OPINION

You have to wonder at what point Marco Silva is officially under pressure. The Portuguese boss spent big in the summer and his Everton side look no better off for doing so. What started as a blip has now become a seriously worrying sustained run of poor form, and it can’t go on forever. You would hope that the board show faith in him and give him time to sort out the issues that are pervading his team, but at the moment they lack identity, and on the basis of what we have seen so far this season, he cannot be trusted to simply throw money at the problem. Maybe with time and a little bit of patience the Toffees can right themselves, but before they can do that, he needs to lift the confidence in his camp, and reassure him of the type of team he wants them to be. At the moment, they are drifting, and it’s not good enough.
