Newcastle United’s swoop to sign Nantes attacker Anthony Limbombe is “in doubt”, according to Daily Star journalist Aaron Stokes.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account that Nantes boss Vahid Halilhodzic and the French club’s president Waldemar Kita cannot agree over the future of the Belgium international, who was signed in the summer from Club Brugge.

It is also understood a “disgraced agent” involved in the deal that adds further complications.

RMC Sport journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed on Wednesday that the Magpies were in “advanced” talks to sign Limbombe.

OPINION

Poor Newcastle. They finally seem as though they are going to sign Limombe, only for the deal to potentially break down on transfer deadline day due to what appears to be some bizarre circumstances. Surely the decision should be made by the Nantes manager, and not the club’s president, about whether the Belgian winger should be allowed to leave? Nantes did only sign Limbombe in the summer and he has only started six games for them since, so Kita probably wants to see the winger play more considering he is yet to get his money’s worth. However if Halilhodzic wants him gone – or wants him to stay – that should be it? It doesn’t help with this agent situation either. It may be best if Newcastle just stay out of this one and have a look at any other targets they might have. There’s still a while to go before the deadline passes so Rafa Benitez might have another ace up his sleeve if he does want to sign a winger.
