OPINION

It seems as though Newcastle United have missed out on the opportunity to sign Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris with Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards claiming that a deal for the Greece international has “collapsed”. Although it is late January disappointment for Newcastle, some fans do not seem that bothered by this deadline day development, and you can understand why. Rafa Benitez doesn’t need a new central midfielder that desperately. Once all players are fit and available once more then he has quite a few options in that area. Plus, Samaris is hardly an improvement on what is already at St James’ Park. The 29-year-old has started just two league games for Benfica this season and is nowhere near as good as he once was. Newcastle’s priority on deadline day is surely sealing deals for Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca, with Samaris more than likely of least concern before the day kicked off. This isn’t terrible news for Newcastle at all.
