Newcastle United are closing in on signing Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris and Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that both deals would be initial loans with the option to be made permanent if they manage to impress on Tyneside in the second-half of the season.

It is also understood that first team striker Joselu could be leaving St James’ Park before the transfer deadline passes on Thursday with the 28-year-old becoming “disillusioned” by his lack of starts this season, despite appearing 18 times in all competitions.

Good move for Newcastle?

At this point, any signing for Newcastle would be a good signing.

Magpies fans have had enough of the way that Mike Ashley has ran the club, especially in the last couple of transfer windows, and two underwhelming loan signings will do nothing more than just pad out Rafa Benitez’s squad.

Benitez needs extra bodies at left-back and in the centre of the midfield, but Samaris and Barreca are hardly any better than what he already has at his disposal.

Joselu leaving is the best news about this update with the striker managing just seven goals in 50 total appearances for the Tyneside club.

Likely to happen?

Barreca joining on loan from Monaco seems the most likely but the Telegraph reports that Porto are also interested in Samaris and there’s a chance that the Greece international could stay in Portugal rather than move to England on a temporary deal.

Who would want Joselu as well?

He is a striker who cannot score and barely has any impact on any game he plays in.

The Spaniard could be stuck in limbo at St James’ Park.
