Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is not exactly someone who likes to splash the cash when it comes to the transfer window which is why Rafael Benitez needs to be on the lookout for whatever bargains might be available this month.

The Spanish boss would love to bring in a whole host of new signings to improve his squad, with a new centre forward, a left back, an attacking midfielder and a winger all likely to be at the top of his shopping list.

Unfortunately he has Ashley above him with his fist clenched around the purse strings at St James’ Park and it would be easier to extract blood from a stone than a penny from the businessman.

What Benitez really needs is a young talent showing exceptional talents with a bargain price tag – meaning that there is some serious profit to be made by Ashley in the future.

Such signings are a real rarity, but there is one out there who ticks all the boxes – as well as giving Newcastle the chance to break their rivals’ hearts.

Step forward Sunderland’s Josh Maja, who has 16 goals in 30 appearances for the Black Cats this season and reportedly has a £4million asking price.

The Sun claim on their website that the Stadium of Light outfit are willing to offload their star man for a cut price as he heads into the final months of his contract and at that sort of price and form, Newcastle cannot possibly resist.

He is reportedly hunted by fellow Premier League sides and so his capture would be something of a coup – and if he can replicate anywhere near his current form for the Magpies his value will skyrocket.

Moving from Sunderland to St James’ Park would break the hearts of those on Wearside – but have their Tyneside neighbours, including Mike Ashley, erupting with excitement.
