Sky Sports pundit Kenny Miller has predicted that Steven Davis will extend his stay at Rangers once his initial half-season loan deal at Ibrox expires at the end of the season.

Steven Gerrard signed the midfielder on loan for the rest of the season from Southampton earlier this month, but his £60,000-a-week contract (Spotrac) at St Mary’s ends in the summer.

Although he endured a slow start to life back in Scotland in the 2-1 defeat at Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, Miller still believes that Davis, and Jermain Defoe, will show their worth for Rangers.

“Them two are going to be fantastic signings,” Miller told BBC Radio Scotland on Thursday night.

“Defoe’s on an 18-month loan, Davo’s only until the end of the season initially, he will probably be here next year as well.

“They will be fantastic signings for the football club, there’s absolutely no doubt.”

OPINION

It wasn’t the best of starts for Davis on Wednesday night, but Rangers fans cannot be quick to judge the 34-year-old, who has hardly kicked a ball this season. Before re-joining the Gers, Davis had made just six appearances in all competitions for Southampton this term, so it is going to take him some time to get back up to speed. It was also a bit of a baptism of fire for the Northern Ireland international. Kilmarnock are a good team and playing on their plastic pitch at Rugby Park can be a nightmare for some players. Davis probably struggled to adapt to that and he will surely show his true colours when Rangers play Livingston at Almondvale on Sunday and if not, it may take a couple of weeks for him to truly bed in. As for Defoe, he enjoyed a goalscoring start to life as a Ger, but his overall performance was not as good as what many would have expected. Gerrard needs to switch his formation back to the one that beat Celtic in December.
