Paul Merson has blasted Adam Forshaw for a “terrible mistake” in Leeds United’s 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on New Year’s Day.

Forshaw attempted to pass the ball back to Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the first-half, but he completely miskicked the ball and handed Jack Colback with a golden chance to put the Reds ahead.

Merson was not impressed with the former Middlesbrough midfielder during the Championship showdown.

“Terrible mistake by Forshaw, he’s tried to play it back to the goalkeeper,” said Merson on Sky Sports News’ Gillette Soccer Special on Tuesday afternoon.

OPINION

Forshaw has been in dreadful form for Leeds United over the festive period, and he managed to cap off that run of games with the worst mistake he could have made. It was a simply awful error by the senior midfielder, who should know better than to be playing balls like that back to his goalkeeper. Unfortunately for Leeds, Kalvin Phillips now faces a three-game ban so that means that Forshaw is pretty much nailed on to start in upcoming league meetings with Derby and Stoke – two very important games. Forshaw has been at Elland Road for a year now and has not done much to prove he was worth £4.5million. Marcelo Bielsa is not likely to sign anyone this month, but he may have to with Forshaw playing this bad and Phillips now suspended. Knowing Bielsa though, he will be able to find a way to dig out some big results.
