Rangers lost their first game back in the Premiership after the winter break, losing 2-1 to Kilmarnock despite new striker Jermain Defoe giving his side the lead in the 12th minute.

BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus was highly critical of Steven Gerrard, who he said would “take a bit of stick about the system he has went with”, claiming that they were “over run in the middle of the park”.

However, he saved his biggest criticism for centre-backs Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley saying “Also that defensive pairing, I don’t think you will ever see again”.

McManus made the criticism on his personal Twitter page during the game on Wednesday night.

The defeat leaves Rangers third in the table, with Kilmarnock leapfrogging them into second spot.

OPINION

Steven Gerrard was without his first-choice centre-back Connor Goldson last night and he’s still refusing to play Nikola Katic, who had seemingly struck up a good partnership with Goldson earlier in the season. Worrall and McAuley just didn’t work at all and Worrall was destroyed by Rangers fans after a mistake he made led directly to a Kilmarnock goal. This was a hugely disappointing night for Rangers after the highs experienced in the previous Premiership win against Celtic. Rangers did miss out on their first competitive game back after the winter break when their cup game against Cowdenbeath was postponed on Friday night, but fans would have still been hoping for a lot more than this. It’s a big setback in the title race, with Celtic beating St Mirren 4-0 and moving three points clear with a game in hand. Goldson should be back for the weekend and we imagine that Worrall will be the one who faces the axe after his horror show on Wednesday night.
