Liverpool are set to recall 21-year-old striker Taiwo Awoniyi from his season-long loan at Gent, according to the Daily Mail.
Their live transfer blog (3.06pm) claims that his loan move went sour after new manager Jess Thorup arrived in October.
Gent have now signed Alexander Sorloth from Crystal Palace and that will reportedly spell the end for Awoniyi, who will now look for another loan move for the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old Nigeria Under-23 player signed a new contract with Liverpool over the summer that will keep him at Anfield until 2022. He scored three goals for Gent across all competitions but hasn’t scored in 16 league games for the Belgian club. Awoniyi will now look for another club for the second-half of the season. He signed for Liverpool back in the summer of 2015 from Nigerian side Imperial Academy for close to a million and there are still hopes he will reach a level for the Liverpool first-team. However, in a succession of loan moves, he’s only really flourished at Royal Excel Mouscron, where he scored 10 goals in 31 games. Liverpool still want him to experience football at a high a level as possible in Europe, with the aim of getting a work permit and coming back ready to challenge for Klopp’s team. It’s a long shot but his new contract suggests they still hold fairly big hopes for him and his next move will be very important for his career at Anfield.
