Right-back Lewie Coyle has will now stay on loan at Fleetwood town until the end of the season, and Phil Hay thinks that spells the end of his Elland Road career.

Talking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Hay was talking about the outgoings that Leeds announced on Monday, with Conor Shaughnessy moving on loan to Hearts and Coyle staying at Fleetwood.

Coyle is now 23-years-old and has made 23 appearances for Leeds but the last game he played was in 2017.

He’s spent the last two seasons at Fleetwood where he’s made 76 appearances.

His loan was due to end on January 6 but it was announced that he would stay there until the end of the season and Hay thinks that calls time on his Elland Road career, where he’s under contract until the summer of 2020.

“It’s hard to see how he has a future at Leeds,” Hay said. “This is probably the end and he will likely move in the summer.

“Shackleton has overtaken him, but the good thing about it is his personality. He’ll be philosophical about it, move on and he’ll make a very good right-back for someone.”

OPINION

There were many fans calling for Lewie Coyle to come back and help out at Leeds on the back of some impressive performances for Fleetwood. However, when you’re 23 and your manager doesn’t want you, despite having a shortage in your natural position, it sort of says it all. Jamie Shackleton is now preferred in the right-back position, with Luke Ayling the number one. Stuart Dallas will be back from injury soon too, and he’s deputised for Ayling in the right-back position this season. Coyle probably won’t need it spelling out for him but he’s done well at Fleetwood and will earn himself a permanent move either there or somewhere else in the summer. He’s a decent right-back, just not good enough for Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.
