Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Rangers have received a work permit for USA international Matt Polster.

Talking in his pre-match press conference, Gerrard said that the deal was still to be signed off officially.

The 25-year-old right-back won his move to Scotland after a successful trial for Rangers and it should be a formality before Rangers now announce the deal.

Gerrard was quoted by PA journalist Andy Newport on Friday afternoon.

OPINION

We had heard that the deal for Polster was just dependent on him getting a work permit. That’s been received now and the USA international should officially become a Rangers player shortly. Polster could be a real find for Rangers after impressing Gerrard on his recent trail. He broke into the USA team last year and offers versatility, able to play at right-back, his preferred position, or in central or defensive midfield roles. It’s another good bit of business in a January window that’s already delivered big-name signings in Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis. Both will have their game-time managed carefully after not playing much football prior to their moves north of the border, but Defoe has already showed that he knows where the back of the net is. He scored in the 12th minute of his competitive debut for Rangers, although it wasn’t a happy night for the pair as Rangers went on to lose 2-1.
