Southampton midfielder Steven Davis is set to undergo a medical with Rangers as he closes in on a return to Ibrox after agreeing a deal in principle with his former club, according to the Belfast Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that the deal could go through within a matter of days and if it does, he should join up with the rest of Steven Gerrard’s squad at their winter training camp in Tenerife.

It is understood that Southampton should be willing to let Davis, 34, leave St Mary’s on a free transfer and that he will become one of the highest-earning players at Ibrox on a £12,000-a-week deal.

Good move for Rangers?

Absolutely.

Davis can add a lot of experience, leadership and quality to the Rangers midfield and Gerrard is playing an absolute blinder by snapping up the Northern Ireland international.

It seems like the Gers will be paying a good amount of money to him in his wages, but for a player who is bound to improve the side, it is definitely worth it.

Rangers will be stronger in the second-half of the season than they were in the first, and that is bad news for Celtic after they were beaten 1-0 in the Old Firm last month.

Likely to happen?

Unless Davis surprisingly fails his medical, it looks like this deal will be wrapped up soon enough.

The midfielder may be 34-years-old but he will be one of the fittest players in the squad once he returns to Ibrox.

He has not played a lot for Southampton this season but that doesn’t mean he won’t be ready to go straight into the first team once the winter break ends later this month.
