Goalkeeper Jed Steer is set to return to Aston Villa after the club ripped up his loan deal at Charlton Athletic.

As reported on the club’s official website, the 26-year-old has been recalled from his season-long loan spell at the Valley and will bolster Dean Smith’s squad ahead of the January window.

Steer was loaned out to the Addicks in the summer and ended up making 20 appearances for the London club during his time in League One.

Aston Villa number one Orjan Nyland could miss the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles in a training session, as reported by Sky Sports.

OPINION

In many ways it is a sensible and expected move from Villa to recall Steer from his spell at Charlton after Nyland suffered that serious injury. By all accounts the Villa number one is likely to play no further part in their season after that blow, meaning the club were a goalkeeper short. However, Villa did just announce the signing of Lovre Kalinic, who is set to arrive this week, while also having Mark Bunn and Andre Moreira to call upon. It is understood that Moreira may return to parent club Atletico Madrid in January, but that still does not affect things too much. The likelihood is that Kalinic will come in and become number one, with Steer slotting in as number two. That means Steer is set to play just one game – tomorrow against QPR – before being benched. Obviously for Villa this works out, but it will be a bitter blow for Charlton to take considering their push for promotion this season.
