Aston Villa have made an offer for Caen right-back Frederic Guilbert, the player’s representatives have told Tendance Ouest.

They told the French outlet that the Championship side were interested in the 24-year-old defender, and had made a bid of a “few million euros” to sign the player.

The representatives also said that there would be bonuses added to the potential fee which would depend on the number of appearances he could make at Villa, and whether they get promoted to the Premier League this season.

However, confusion over a potential move reigns with Caen themselves denying that Aston Villa have made an offer.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Boss Dean Smith is eager to bolster his defence and is keen to add some full-backs to the squad, but it remains to be seen whether this would be a good move for Villa. Recruiting a left-back should be more of a priority for the club seeming as Neil Taylor is not doing the best of jobs. There is no denying the talent that Guilbert has, it is just a question of whether he is really needed this month.

Likely to happen?

Seeing as the club have refuted the fact that Villa have seemingly made an offer in this window, a move does not seem the most likely at the moment. Right-back is not the biggest issue that Smith has right now, and they would essentially be wasting money that could go to much better use. If the club say that they have not received an offer, how could a move possibly progress? Answer – it simply cannot based on this claim.
