Sheffield United are in pole position to sign Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim on their live transfer blog (Monday, 2.57pm) that the Championship’s third-placed club are leading the race along with Bristol City for the capture of the 26-year-old.

Sky report Villa are willing to allow Hogan to leave on loan by Thursday night’s transfer deadline after he struggled to make an impact this season.

OPINION

What a wretched signing Hogan has been for the Midlands giants. The signing from Brentford two Januarys ago has scored just 10 goals from 61 Villa matches, a stark contrast to his goal-machine efforts at the Londoners. Even the renewal of his highly successful relationship with Dean Smith has failed to pay dividends, and Hogan has failed to even get on the Villa bench in the last two matches. Tammy Abraham is the first-choice striker at Villa Park, with Jonathan Kodjia and Keinan Davis the back-ups. Abraham’s decision to spurn a move to Wolves this month means the writing is on the wall for the Villa career of Hogan. It is remarkable to think he cost £10.5million in 2017. Of all the wretched signings made by Villa in recent years, few have been as poor as this one. And, there is extensive competition for the unwanted accolade of the biggest waste of money from the club, too.
