Motherwell have confirmed that Aston Villa forward Ross McCormack has sealed a temporary return to the club after agreeing a loan deal.

The Scottish Premiership side confirmed on their official Twitter account and website that the 32-year-old would be reuniting with the team where he spent two years after leaving Rangers, in a move which will keep him north of the border until the end of the season.

McCormack’s most recent loan spell away from Villa saw him with Australian outfit Central Coast Mariners, where he made five appearances and scored just one goal before suffering a knee injury.

Opinion

McCormack might have been hoping for something of a lifeline under new Villa boss Dean Smith but it appears that the man in the dugout is not willing to give him a shot at redemption after being exiled by his predecessor Steve Bruce. His record in the Championship speaks for itself and with plenty of rumours circulating about Tammy Abraham, he might well have been a smart option to keep around the club until it was decided what was happening with the on-loan Chelsea hitman. Still, he is back on UK shores and able to put himself back in the spotlight once again as he heads into the twilight of his career. He knows that his future at Villa is as good as dead and so needs to prove he still has what it takes up in Scotland in order to secure a permanent move elsewhere in the summer. It is a sad state of affairs for the Scot, but it goes to show that no player is bigger than the club.
