Leeds United are one of a host of English sides considering a move for USMNT international striker Gyasi Zardes, according to TEAMtalk.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign for MLS outfit Columbus Crew, scoring 20 goals in 36 appearances for the club since going from LA Galaxy last January on a free transfer.

Zardes also has 40 caps for the USA, scoring six goals, and is capable of playing on either wing or as an orthodox centre forward.

Alongside Marcelo Bielsa’s side, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, Fulham, Middlesbrough, and Norwich City are all credited with having an interest in the 6’2″ [Transfermarkt] attacker.

Good move for Leeds?

It’s hard to argue with Zardes’ goalscoring record over the past twelve months, and he would surely make a great addition to any side looking to get out of the Championship or stay in the Premier League. The American is blessed with a natural instinct for finding the back of the net, and plays with an intelligence that would be well suited to Bielsa’s outlook on the game. His versatility would be a massive bonus for Leeds and would provide some much needed variety, especially in wide areas. Moving from the MLS, it’s hard to see Zardes costing a fortune, and he could prove to be a very shrewd investment as United push for the top flight.

Likely to happen?

There are a number of clubs reportedly in for the striker, and that could complicate matters. Leeds may hold a natural advantage in terms of their status and the fact that they have a manager like Bielsa at the helm, but it could be a real battle to secure Zardes’ services. The USMNT international has never played outside of his home nation and there’s no guarantee that he will leave Columbus Crew, where he has struck a rich vein of form, but if he does, Leeds are as likely a destination as any.
