Derby County have taken the significant step of contacting the Football Association over allegations of spying from Championship Leeds United in the latest twist in the saga, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim on their website that after the Rams had issued a statement confirming there had been an incident at the training ground involving a Leeds employee, they are set to take the matter further and have already been in touch with the FA over an investigation.

It is stated the FA are also in talks with the English Football League as Leeds face a punishment if any wrongdoing has been found to take place.

And Championship fans thought that the title race was the most exciting thing that was going to happen in the second tier this season. This whole turn of events, which comes on the eve of the clash between the two sides, is simply extraordinary and something unheard of in English football for a number of years. It will be fascinating to see if Leeds come out with a statement of their own or whether they will stay silent on the matter. No one, apart from those involved, really knows who the individual was or why he was at Derby’s ground, but the reports of binoculars and wire cutters makes it seem all very cloak and dagger. Is this Marcelo Bielsa trying to get an advantage? Could it have been an eager employee working on their lonesome to try and impress the boss? There are so many questions but it could have worrying consequences for the Whites.
