Ligue 1 side Angers are interested in re-signing their former striker Jonathan Kodjia from Aston Villa, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The newspaper claims that the French club are mulling over a bid to try and sign the 29-year-old on loan from Villa for the remainder of the season.

However, there has yet to be an official bid from Stephane Moulin’s side. Kodjia spent the 2014-15 season with Angers before moving to English football with Bristol City.

The Ivory Coast international has scored six times in 28 games this campaign but, due to the phenomenal success of Tammy Abraham, he has rarely played centrally.

Good move for Aston Villa?

This is an interesting one. Kodjia is a tremendously talented player so on the face of it you wouldn’t think offloading him in the middle of a play off push would be a good idea. However, he’s no longer the number one option up front for Villa. Abraham has usurped him as the main man this term and has been in sensational form. That has forced Kodjia to play out wide for much of the season, but even there he’s not guaranteed a start. Smith has the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Yannick Bolasie and Albert Adomah to call upon, meaning that opportunities will likely be limited for the former Bristol City man moving forward. So perhaps a temporary stint back at Angers, ready for a return in the summer once Abraham’s own loan has ended, could be just what the doctor ordered for the striker.

Likely to happen?

Well, Angers have yet to submit an official bid so that will obviously need to happen first. There’s no way of knowing what Villa’s stance on this one is so we’ll have to wait and see what they decide to do with Kodjia moving forward.
