Celtic are eyeing a deadline day deal to sign Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan, according to the Express.

The newspaper claimed via their live transfer blog on Thursday [06:40am] that Brendan Rodgers is “eager” to sign the 24-year-old right-back in a last-gasp deal before the transfer deadline passes at 11pm.

It is understood that the Hoops want to sign Toljan on loan but with an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

Good move for Celtic?

Toljan has only made one appearance for Borussia Dortmund this season due to injury issues and him failing to feature in the plans of Lucien Favre.

That means that he could take a while to get up to speed with Celtic if they were to sign him and if a deal was completed on deadline day, it could be weeks before he is able to start a game.

It definitely makes sense to try and sign the German right-back on a loan-to-buy basis, that way Rodgers can see if he is any good before committing the club’s funds towards signing him in the summer when Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa are both out of contract.

Toljan should be a quality addition for the Bhoys, the only potential issue is his fitness.

Likely to happen?

Celtic need to strengthen their defence on deadline day and Toljan would be a clever addition because he can play at left-back and centre-back as well.

Rodgers will surely see that he can cover a number of positions with just one signing and Dortmund are more than likely going to be happy to let the 24-year-old leave due to his lack of game-time.
