Celtic are aiming to sign out of favour Borussia Dortmund right-back Jeremy Toljan before the transfer deadline passes on Thursday, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claimed via their print edition [January 29, back page] that Brendan Rodgers is exploring the option of a deal to land the former German youth international before the transfer window closes on Thursday.

Toljan, 24, made 19 starts for the European giants last term after completing a move from Hoffenheim the previous summer, but has fallen down the pecking order at the Champions League side, and has been told he can leave the club.

Good move for Celtic?

Toljan has some serious quality, but he isn’t getting a look in at Dortmund, and a move seems like it could be a good move for both parties. For their part, the Hoops would be getting a first rate full-back with youth international experience, while Toljan would get the opportunity to rekindle a career that has hit the skids severely in recent months. Class doesn’t disappear overnight, and with a bit of trust and some patience, Toljan could be a real asset for the Bhoys.

Likely to happen?

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly told Toljan he can leave the club to seek new opportunities elsewhere, and a move to a club of Celtic’s stature could be really good thing for him. The deal will ultimately hinge on whether or not the two clubs want to explore a permanent or temporary move, but either way, there shouldn’t be too much to stand in the way of it, if Rodgers is serious about getting it done.
