Times journalist George Caulkin has delivered his latest views on Peter Kenyon and the potential Newcastle takeover, and revealed that someone he knows has been approached by Kenyon for investment.

After being asked by a Newcastle fan what he thought the latest accurate information was, Caulkin said his understanding “based on interminable conversations… that certainly until very recently, PK has been seeking investors (I know one of the people he approached).”

Caulkin rounded off by saying that it didn’t make him feel very confident that the takeover would go through.

However, in a follow-up tweet he said it was entirely possible that his cynicism was blinding him to the positives, although he said “I’ll be 100% cynical until everything is 100% done”.

This comes after it was reported that by the Sun that Kenyon was trying to ‘crowd fund’ by offering investors a slice of Newcastle for a minimum of £1m in a bid to raise the shortfall needed.

OPINION

If the Sun report is true than it does seem to be a stretch to see the takeover going through. Caulkin is a very reliable source of Newcastle information and he’s very careful what he puts out on Twitter. That he knows someone that’s been approached for investment is significant and it means that the deal is still alive – certainly as far as Kenyon is concerned. Is it likely? Well, Caulkin doesn’t say who was approached, what the conversation was, or how it ended, but it doesn’t sound hugely positive. Would there be up to 100 people all willing to put £1million in to help fund a takeover and own a slice of Newcastle? It’s possible but it seems like a very messy proposition that probably wouldn’t appeal to anyone who hasn’t got more than a passing interest in the Newcastle side. As a pure investment there must be cleaner and less risky ways to make more money. However, Caulkin doesn’t rule it out 100% and while there’s hope, as they say…
