Gaetano Berardi appears to have suffered an injury blow after limping off the pitch while playing for Leeds United’s Under-23s, according to Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Joe Urquhart.

The reliable journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account that it’s “not good” news for the 30-year-old right-back, who was one of a number of senior players to have featured in the Under-23s’ clash against Southampton on Monday night.

On the Yorkshire Evening Post website, it is claimed that Berardi suffered his apparent injury while off the ball in the first-half.

OPINION

Berardi has not played for the Leeds first team since October 24, and it appears as though he might have to wait a while longer before sealing his comeback after this injury blow on Monday night. Marcelo Bielsa has always played first teamers in the Under-23s to keep up their fitness and help them return from injury, but sometimes it can go wrong, like it has done here with Berardi. The 30-year-old is desperately needed back in the squad having been out of action for so long, especially as he is not the only defender he is regularly getting injured. In all competitions, the one-time Switzerland international has managed just eight appearances under Marcelo Bielsa’s leadership. He is clearly someone who has not taken too well to the training regime that the Argentine installed over the summer. Leeds are managing without Berardi but they definitely need him back. It would be a good idea for Bielsa to look at signing another defender if this is a major blow for the 30-year-old.
