It hasn’t been an amazing couple of weeks to be an Aston Villa player, but at least Lovre Kalinic has had an impact on the club’s supporters after an impressive display in the 3-0 defeat to Wigan on Saturday. The Croatia international has had to wait some time to make his league debut for the Villains after his arrival from Gent was confirmed in December, but he certainly wasted no time in trying to impress with a strong save to stop Wigan taking an early lead. No wonder some fans were drooling over the shot-stopper, who looks a lot better than Orjan Nyland did. Villa’s defence is by no means the finished article. Dean Smith has done well to get Kalinic, but replacing Nyland for him is like changing one cog in a whole faulty machine. The players in front of Kalinic failed to impress and in most cases, goalkeepers can only look as good as the defenders in front of them. Kalinic needs to continue doing what he does and hope that Smith sorts out the defenders in front of him.
