Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has delivered his verdict on his former club’s 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Friday.

Villa had to settle for a point at the Hawthorns despite being 2-1 up after 90 minutes, with James Rodriguez managing to bundle in a stoppage time equaliser that appeared to bounce off his hand while he was on the ground.

McGrath was evidently very frustrated in the way the draw came about via his personal Twitter account, questioning how it was possible for the match officials to “miss the hand ball.”

He said: “That’s hard for Villa fans to take. Maybe another two refs behind the goal line and Drone with another smaller ref. Judas escariot how can they all miss the hand ball.”

OPINION

It is no surprise that McGrath is annoyed about how Rodriguez’ goal came about for West Brom, as it was clear to be seen by everybody else that the ball came off his hand before it went into the net. Villa have arguably been robbed of two points here as they were the better side overall, and going into stoppage time, they were the team that deserved the victory. Nevertheless, it is what it is – but that is not going to stop the likes of McGrath declaring the injustice of it all, which was perfectly summed up when he described the officials as “Judas Escariot” for missing the hand ball. It remains to be seen just how it managed to go unnoticed as it has ultimately affected the entire result, something which may prove crucial at the end of the season. Like McGrath ponted out, the draw will be “hard for Villa fans to take”, a prospect which will no doubt be the case after Friday night.
