Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka is planning to make numerous signings in the January transfer window if money is made available to him with a number of players at the club lined up for the exit, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the Championship outfit, who sit fifth in the second tier, need to offload some of their current talents to give the Spanish boss what he wants, with finances named as the stumbling block heading into the new year.

The summer saw Forest bring in no less than nine permanent signings as well as a host of loan arrivals too.

Opinion

With Forest pushing for a top six finish and a shot at promotion, Karanka knows January will be make or break for his side. The right kind of signings will keep his men in the running but missing out and failing to strengthen could see their rivals overtake them. It is a long way until the end of the season but preparing now is the only thing that will bring success. There is plenty of deadwood among the squad who could do with being shipped out and only once there is space, both physically and in terms of the wage bill, will he be able to get the new arrivals on board. It is important that the Forest board back him when it comes to recruitment and do not leave Forest floundering while other sides strengthen – although it could be that his transfer kitty is built up of whatever he can muster from sales. The new year could be an exciting time for the club – but it could also be bitterly disappointing. Those at the top of the City Ground will determine which way the pendulum swings.
