Tottenham are hoping to open their new stadium in time for the Premier League clash against Newcastle United on February 2, according to the Guardian.

The newspaper claims that Spurs are eyeing the game against Leicester a week later as the latest possible fixture for the grand opening of their new 62,000-seater at White Hart Lane, but ideally they want it to be ready in time to host Rafa Benitez’s Magpies.

Previous reports had suggested that Spurs wanted their showdown with Manchester United to be the game to open the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but in an update on their official website on Wednesday, chairman Daniel Levy confirmed that fixture will be taking place at Wembley.

OPINION

Every club in the Premier League has been a potential opponent for Tottenham’s grand opening of their new stadium it seems. Several reported dates have been ruled out of contention for Spurs to finally return to their home at White Hart Lane, and most Spurs fans will be sceptical over whether this report will actually be the one that gets it right. Playing Man United would have been the apt opening for the new 62,000-seater stadium because they were the last opponents at the old White Hart Lane, but unless the opening is put back to next season, that won’t be happening. Surely the grand opening is close now though. Judging by the images, it looks like a stadium that is ready to host football, but there are obviously a lot of other issues that you cannot see on the surface. Levy does not want to say a date until the club gets their safety certificate. Let’s just hope that happens soon.
