Chris Sutton hopes to see Leigh Griffiths back in a Celtic shirt sooner rather than later after it was reported that the Scotland striker will go into rehab over gambling issues.

According to the Daily Record, the 28-year-old has checked into rehab for gambling-related issues and manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he is taking an extended break from football to receive professional help.

Former Celtic star Sutton has sent his best wishes to Griffiths, and hopes that he is able to make a speedy return for the Hoops.

“Best wishes and support to Leigh Griffiths. Lets hope to see him back in a Celtic shirt before long,” he said on his personal Twitter account in reaction to the news on Wednesday.

OPINION

Griffiths has really struggled this season and it appears as though this is one of the major reasons behinds why he has not been very effective for Celtic. The Scotland international has had injury problems, but they are part of parcel of being a footballer and this is something that is much, much bigger and should be dealt with by experts in that field. Rodgers and the Celtic fans will be gutted to miss Griffiths over the coming months, especially as he will miss some big games in both the Europa League this week and a Glasgow derby against Rangers later in the month. Griffiths is someone who shines in the big matches, so being without him for them games is a huge blow for the Bhoys. Odsonne Edouard will have a lot of work to do over the festive break but this major news adds to the fact that Rodgers must sign a new striker in January.
