Chris Sutton was blown away by Ryan Kent’s performance in Rangers’ 1-0 win against Celtic at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon.

Kent, 22, had missed the last four games with an injury, but returned to Steven Gerrard’s starting line-up this weekend to play a crucial role in helping the Gers win the Old Firm derby.

The on-loan Liverpool star’s supplied the assist for Ryan Jack’s first-half winner after a mazy run that turned Celtic right-back Mikael Lustig inside out, and ex-Hoops striker Sutton was clearly impressed by his impact.

“They won well, 1-0 flattered Celtic,” said Sutton on BT Sport 1 on Saturday [03:00pm]. “Rangers should have won by a lot more goals than they did.

“It was a big win, Kent is a big player for Rangers, they’ve missed him in recent weeks. [He was] really good for the first goal.”

OPINION

Kent was fantastic for Rangers on Saturday and Gerrard should be having a good think about signing the on-loan Liverpool winger on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window, because he could be a star for years to come at Ibrox. Sutton is right to say that the Light Blues missed Kent while he was injured. Eros Grezda has been a bit of a waste of money based on his displays so far and Glenn Middleton, at 18 years of age, is still too young to put in consistently good displays. Kent is without doubt the best option that Rangers have out on the left wing and hopefully he can stay fit for the second-half of the season. Gerrard’s link to Liverpool has definitely brought mixed results. Ovie Ejaria was so poor he has already returned to Anfield having had his loan deal terminated, but Kent is on another level to him and is a contender for Rangers’ player of the season.
