Chelsea went down to a shock 1-0 defeat against Leicester at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and MotD pundit Alan Shearer said that only Marcos Alonso and Eden Hazard could hold their heads high after the game.

Jamie Vardy scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute in a stilted performance from the Premier League giants at their home ground.

Talking on Match of the Day (BBC1, Sat, 10.30pm), Shearer said Chelsea were poor and that Leicester deserved to win.

“Other than Alonso and Hazard there wasn’t much creativity all afternoon,” Shearer said.

“There wasn’t that reaction from them that you’d expect when they went behind and there was a lack of protection in front of the back four. Leicester deserved to win that game.”

OPINION

It was a day of shocks in the Premier League yesterday with both Chelsea and Man City losing games where they were heavy favourites. At least Pep’s City side gave it a go though. This was the sort of display from Chelsea that makes home fans hang their heads in shame. They didn’t go out on their shield and gave nothing to the home fans by way of consolation for an unexpected defeat. They should still have had a point. Alonso was clean through right at the end of the game and was desperately unlucky to hit the inside of the post with his shot. However, it’s fair to say that they didn’t really deserve anything from the game and Leicester – like Shearer said – were deserved winners at Stamford Bridge. The result leaves Chelsea 11 points off the pace at the top of the table where Liverpool and Man City are threatening to run away with it. Chelsea will now have to set their sights on holding onto a top-four spot after Arsenal drew level on points with them after a 3-1 win over Burnley.
