Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald has put the cats among the pigeons by claiming that Mike Ashley could try to take control at Rangers if his Newcastle takeover goes through.

Ashley surprised everyone when he announced on Monday that he was in talks to sell Newcastle and that he hoped a deal could go through by January.

Ashley isn’t a popular figure at Rangers and is locked in a legal battle with the Scottish side over the sale of their kits.

But McDonald thinks that Ashley could try and oust Dave King and wrest control of the club.

He tweeted, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, “If he does sell wouldn’t surprise me if he tries to take on Dave King for full control at Rangers.”

OPINION

Former Celtic player McDonald is really stirring the pot here. Ashley surprised everyone, not least the Newcastle fans, when he went on Sky Sports to say he was in talks over a Newcastle takeover. There’s a lot of cynicism on the Newcastle side though, with Alan Shearer saying it’s a case of deja vu with the transfer window about to open. The same thing happened last year and nothing came of it. Newcastle fans will be praying it’s different this time after suffering Ashley for way too long. They blame him for the lack of progress at the club and despite conciliatory moves this season, they will never hold him in anything but contempt. As for Ashley, he’s a businessman and doesn’t seem to care about football. He’s been through a lot at Newcastle and we can’t see him wanting to go through it all again at Rangers. They might be on the brink of something special with Gerrard but we think there’s more chance of Donald Trump taking over than Mike Ashley. Rangers fans can sleep soundly in their beds at night.
