Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has warned any clubs trying to sign their top players that it will take a large sum of money to prise anyone away from Ibrox.

The Glasgow giants have made huge progress under the Liverpool legend this season, and Gerrard is keen not to see his hard work undone by rival outfits.

He has fired a warning to his players’ potential suitors: “For any club looking over our fence, if you want our players you have to come with top, top money,” he said at his pre match press conference, via the club’s official Twitter account.

Gerrard’s bullishness will surely please the club’s fans, who saw their team go to the top of the Scottish Premiership this weekend.

OPINION

This is the sort of attitude you expect from a big club like Rangers and it’s good to hear from Gerrard. He is building something at Ibrox but he knows there is always the possibility that teams south of the border will snatch his best players away from him. With that, unfortunately, being an inevitability in modern day football, the most Gers can do is get the maximum amount they can for each player who walks through the Ibrox exit door. That money can then be reinvested back into the club, ensuring that they don’t take a significant step back at any point. It will be interesting to see how far Gerrard’s word stretch when someone comes in for a James Tavernier or a Alfredo Morelos, but at the moment he is making all the right noises. Rangers need to keep hold of all their best players if they are to continue on their current path forward – and if they ever hope to overthrow fierce rivals Celtic at the head of Scottish football.
