Former Celtic hero Tony Watt has praised Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers’s ‘amazing management’ in the Leigh Griffiths situation.

Rodgers told the media on Wednesday that the striker would be taking some time off from football to deal with ongoing personal issues.

Watt has praised the manager as well as offering support to Griffiths: “Hope Griffiths gets all the help he needs,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Amazing management from Rodgers.

“Had a lot of help in the past if I ever struggled. Russell Slade being probably the best. Saved my career. Health is most important and your brain is a dangerous thing! He’ll come back even stronger,” he finished.

OPINION

This is nice to see from Watt, not only him offering his support and well wishes to Griffiths but also him praising the part Rodgers has played in all this. It’s not important in the grand scheme of things but this couldn’t have been an easy decision for the Celtic chief from a footballing point of view. The decision to allow Griffiths the time that he needs to get help means that Rodgers is left with just one senior frontman in Odsonne Edouard. For the Northern Irishman to put that aside and realise that some things are bigger than football is commendable and heart-warming. Health and a person’s well-being is the most important thing, as Watt says, so it’s important that Griffiths takes the time to sort those thing’s out. He hasn’t looked the same this season and there was clearly something going on and now we see what is was. Credit to Rodgers for making a sound, humane decision, even if it wasn’t ideal in a footballing sense.
