Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has claimed that he and his teammates are welcoming the prospect of the club making new signings in January.

Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to reinforce his playing personnel and the Hoops have been linked with several players in recent days.

Chief amongst those reported are PSG forward Timothy Weah, and Belgian international full-back Timothy Castagne, who it is believed the Bhoys have made a formal approach for, according to the Daily Mail.

Speaking to the Evening Times, McGregor suggested that the current Celtic squad were relishing the prospect of any new acquisitions.

He said: “I think you always welcome that as a player. It gives everyone a lift and it gives you that little bit of competition in the squad as well.

“It is up to the manager what he wants to do and there is obviously a lot that goes on but for us as players it comes down to putting out the best team that we can.”

OPINION

Celtic could certainly do with a little bit of a boost going into the new year. For the first time in a long time they look as if they might have a genuine title race on their hands, and while they will still be clear favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season, the unusual level of pressure being applied could be a real test for a group of players so accustomed to winning. Aside from that, the Hoops desperately need to add strength in depth up front, and while the competition could mean that certain players are sidelined more often than they have been, presumably if it strengthens the squad and gives them a better chance at regaining their dominance at the top of the SPL, no Celtic player is going to complain about that. Celtic should win the league again this season, but without any new signings, that task will be a whole lot harder.
