BT Sport reporter and presenter Darrell Currie says there is “no doubt” that Celtic will launch a move to try and sign Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna after heralding his performance in his side’s win over Rangers on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old was pivotal to the Dons picking up a 1-0 win at Ibrox, a result which leaves the top three separated by just one point and Aberdeen climbing up to sixth.

Speaking of the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) powerhouse, who was at the heart of a transfer hunt from English Championship side Aston Villa in the summer, Currie, who fronts BT’s coverage of Scottish football, insists that Celtic will be making a move to make him one of their own in the not too distant future.

He wrote on his personal Twitter account: “Scott McKenna’s display at Ibrox tonight will only increase interest in him this January. What a player he’s developing into. You can see why Aston Villa bid so high for him, and why Celtic will no doubt be in for him again soon…”

Opinion

With the future of Dedryck Boyata very much up in the air – although clearly it does not lie at Parkhead – Brendan Rodgers will be seeking for a new centre back sooner rather than later – so is this Currie just adding two and two to get four? Possibly, but at the same time how many proven centre backs with international experience but also the room to develop and grow are there in the Scottish top flight? Not too many and so it makes perfect sense that Celtic will be keeping a very close eye on McKenna ahead of January. Will he be easy to prise away from their top flight rivals? Not in the slightest, but when the reigning title holders come calling it is going to be a tough offer to turn down. McKenna, who could well have been playing in England right now, may well see it as a stepping stone to bigger and brighter things and so will be very much tempted if a deal does come his way. It ticks boxes for both player and the clubs – if Celtic offer Aberdeen enough money, that is – and so there is no reason it cannot go ahead.
