Rangers attacker Umar Sadiq has had his season long loan spell with the club terminated early, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that manager Steven Gerrard has lost patience with the 21-year-old, who will return to parent club Roma with weeks still to go until the January transfer window opens.

The move will free up space for the Gers boss to make a loan bid for Liverpool frontman Dominic Solanke once the New Year rolls around.

Sadiq has failed to make any progress whatsoever in a Rangers shirt and is yet to start a Scottish Premiership game for the club this campaign.

Good move for Rangers?

In a word, yes. Sadiq was going nowhere at Ibrox, that much was clear. He may be a talented player and could go on to have a decent career but it’s simply not worked out for him in Glasgow. He made a slow start and never recovered, and just doesn’t seem to be Gerrard’s cup of tea. Obviously Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty are both having solid seasons which limited his chances, but he’s done nothing in the few opportunities he has been given. The chance to bring Solanke in meant that Sadiq had to be cut loose. The Englishman is a far more promising player and Sadiq has ended up being the sacrificial lamb in order to bring him to Ibrox. Overall, if Solanke joins up then it’s happy days for Rangers.

Likely to happen?

It certainly sounds as if Sadiq leaving is nailed-on. However, Solanke’s arrival is less certain. There will almost definitely be competition for the Liverpool youngster, however Gerrard’s Reds connections could see Rangers seal the deal. Let’s hope that that’s the case.
