Rangers are desperate to offload Mexican flop Carlos Pena in the January window, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim the Glasgow giants are keen to dispense with the 28-year-old, who has 18 months left on a contract worth £20,000-a-week..

The Scottish Sun report attacking midfielder Pena is heading back to Ibrox next month after two failed loan spells in his homeland marked by poor form and a series of controversial, off-field incidents.

OPINION

It is getting close to the point where Rangers might need to cancel Pena’s registration and look to do a deal where they pay up most of the remaining 18 months on his contract. There is seemingly nowhere for the player to go after burning most of his bridges in his native Mexico, certainly at the elite clubs in the country. Failed loans at ex-Light Blues boss Pedro Caixinha’s Cruz Azul and then Necaxa this year included a series of embarrassing off-field, alcohol-related incidents and a spell in rehab in a bid to recover from his alcohol addiction. Pena needs professional help to conquer his demons, and there is no chance of him returning to Ibrox and winning a place back in Steven Gerrard’s side. Even if he was in perfect physical and mental health, the Mexican’s style is just not suited to the Scottish game, where the intensity and physical rigeur is on a level that he can’t cope with.
