Graham Dorrans has had a tough time of things at Rangers.

The former Premier League star arrived at Ibrox in the summer of 2017, admitting the move was a dream for him [BBC], but has since gone on to manage just 23 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Injuries have consistently dogged the Scotland international midfielder, who would likely have become a key player for the Gers had he avoided such issues.

His quality is undeniable, and his experience in the Premier League makes him an invaluable asset to the club and to manager Steven Gerrard, who has shown his frustration with his squad’s inexperience at times this season.

Dorrans’ latest issue, a serious knee injury picked up in the summer, is now beginning to subside, and Gerrard has said he is hopeful of a return to action in January for the 31-year-old.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Gerrard said: “Graham Dorrans is progressing well. If everything keeps going in the right direction then hopefully he will be back sometime between the end of January and beginning of February.”

This is a hugely positive update for both Dorrans and Rangers, who could really do with a player of his calibre in a midfield which has struggled for creativity at points this season.

However, with Dorrans out of contract in 2020, you do feel as though he will be entering last-chance saloon when he returns to action for the club.

His injury problems have meant they have received minimal return on their investment in him – a £1.5million fee and lofty wages on a three-year deal – and they will be keen to get some kind of dividend for that.

Should Dorrans not perform upon his return then thoughts will surely turn to a sale in the summer, while the club will still be able to attract a decent fee for him.

Obviously if he plays well and helps Rangers to a positive season then Gerrard will be keen to keep him on, but it really is crunch time for the Scotland international if he wants to keep his Ibrox dream alive.
