It has been a forgettable season for Jonny Hayes, who has sat so far down the Celtic midfielder pecking order that he had not been seen in action since August and his name had not even been mentioned as a contender even when the side were robbed of so many first teamers last month. Brendan Rodgers recalled the Republic of Ireland international to the starting XI against Motherwell as he rang the changes – seven in total – following Sunday’s Scottish League Cup triumph. Deployed on the right of the midfield, Hayes played 81 minutes of the match before he was replaced by Tom Rogic, one of the Hampden Park heroes who had been omitted. The former Aberdeen man’s performance attracted plenty of ire from Celtic supporters on social media as many had no sympathy for the fact it was his first appearance in four months. Harsh, maybe, but it is hard to see on this evidence how Hayes can get much game time in the coming weeks.

I honestly forgot Jonny Hayes was playing until he got fouled outside the box at around the 50 minute mark.
