Rangers could be handed a boost in their hunt to sign Everton playmaker Kieran Dowell on loan next month after Steven Gerrard made him his number one January target, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claimed via their live transfer blog on Wednesday [03:12pm] that the Toffees are eyeing up a move for Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Hannes Wolf, who plays in the same position as Gers target Dowell.

It is understood that Marco Silva could be more open to the idea of loaning the 21-year-old to the Light Blues if he can snap up Wolf, however Arsenal and Tottenham are also said to be keen on the Austrian midfielder.

Good move for Rangers?

Dowell would be an excellent addition for Rangers if they are able to sign him next month.

Gerrard could do with some extra creativity in his midfield and an attack-minded playmaker like Dowell should be able to make a considerable difference in the Gers’ bid for silverware.

Dowell impressed on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, scoring 10 goals and supplying five assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

He has surely improved since then and could be a valuable asset at Ibrox for the second-half of the season.

Likely to happen?

If Everton sign Wolf then there is no reason for Silva not to let Dowell go on loan to Rangers, but the 21-year-old is not getting a look-in in the Premier League right now anyway, so why should signing the Austrian matter?

Dowell’s development will stall if he is stuck playing Under-23s football when it is clear that he is more than good enough for men’s football.

Silva should know that agreeing a deal with the Gers will be beneficial for all parties, the only issue for Gerrard is that Dowell is bound to be wanted by other clubs, perhaps ones in the English Championship.
